What is Musa?

Musa is material made out of banana fibres reinforced with natural wool, responsibly sourced from local herding communities. Musa is NOT a vegan leather as it uses natural wool as one of its components. It is NOT GRS certified as it is not made from recycled materials.

How is Musa an alternative to leather?

Musa is an ideal product that is made as environmentally-friendly as possible, with plant or waste based materials. It does not harm the consumer and can be disposed off without damaging the environment. Musa is made from bio based materials like banana fibres and natural wool.
Musa has been tested on various industrial parameters by global testing agencies like Interlake and Bureau Veritas, at par with leather on tensile strength, tear stitch strength, abrasion resistance, rub tests etc, Musa has proven to be a durable material consistently
Note: It is tested for chemical, physical and material composition as per international standards. We can provide the required reports if needed for the same.

How is it made?

After the bananas are harvested and the plant is cut for new sprouts to grow, we take away the bulky stems which are considered waste. Local women come together to separate layers of the stem and further decorticate in order to extract the fibre. Banana fibres are then left to dry in the sun. The banana fibres are further combined and blended with natural wool, responsibly sourced from surplus of the local herding communities. The material is then flattened, heat pressed and finished in various luxurious styles.

Is Musa toxin-free?

Musa adheres to the industry standards for toxin free production and is REACH/ PROP65 compliant.

What all finishes can be done on Musa?

Musa can be dyed, embossed, foiled, printed and customised just like leather. It holds the technical specifications required by the prospective industries.

What is the standard size of a panel?

The standard panel size is 24”x36”inches.

What is the minimum quantity/large quantity ?

For standard running colours, there are no MOQs. For custom colours or finishes, the production begins with 10 panels.
Musa is produced in facilities catering to the leather export market for the last 30 years. With an expansive infrastructure, secure supply chain and trained human resource, Musa can be ordered in large quantities.

What is the lead time for an order?

While Sample Kits can be shipped in 3 days, production orders can take anywhere between 30-60 days depending upon assortment.

Is Musa patent protected?

The patent for Musa was applied in 2020 and is in process under the IP guidelines.
